I've had a life-long struggle with acne, and shaving only makes it worse. Even a regimen of Accutane back in the early 90s failed to completely banish zits from my life. To top it off, my skin is sensitive and my beard is rough so I have to baby my skin to avoid post-shaving breakouts. Last month I began using three Art of Shaving products to grease my Gillette Fusion Proglide Power Razor, 1-count Package, but I also wanted a salicylic acid astringent to fight acne because I juggle plenty of lotions. The Jack Black Clear Complexion Solution fits the bill, and I can't remember the last time my face has looked so smooth and blemish-free.
After a post-shave warm-water rinse I apply the Jack Black astringent to my dry face with a cotton ball. The Jack Black website recommends that you wait a half-hour after shaving before using the Clear Complexion Solution, but I don't have that much spare time in the morning. Therefore I put it on a couple of minutes later, right before using the The Art of Shaving After-Shave Balm - Unscented 3.4 oz. Since my scalp also breaks out even though I don't shave it I also use the solution to help tame these blemishes. So far it seems to be doing the trick (FYI: at night I use a 10% benzoyl peroxide lotion on my face, neck, and scalp).
I've been wary of astringents in the past (like witch hazel) because they tended to sting and seemed impotent when it came to dealing with acne. But the Jack Black Clear Complexion Solution actually feels decent, and combined with my Art of Shaving products it has really helped my face cope with daily shaving. I suppose that Jack Black would prefer that I exclusively use their brand, but if I can cobble Toshiba, Oppo, and Denon components into a decent entertainment system then I can certainly mix shaving products. By the way, the Jack Black and Art of Shaving websites both have good information about shaving in general and the specific use of their respective lines.
UPDATE 11/24/10: I should have obeyed the directions and not tried to use this product so soon after shaving because as time went on my skin began to show signs of irritation. Therefore, I switched back to using a small amount of moisturizing lotion containing salicylic acid in conjunction with the the Art of Shaving Balm. But I still apply the Jack Black solution to the rest of my head (I keep my hair short, but I don't shave my scalp) and chest in the morning and my break-outs have reduced, so I recommend it for use in that manner.
