In 1993, Matthew Tilker, Mistral's founder and president, was studying alternative cancer therapies in Europe, when during a stay in Provence, Tilker met a 70-year-old master soap maker, who crafted soaps according to a 300-year-old traditional triple-milling process. The soap maker's artistry, knowledge, and love of his craft left a lasting impression on Tilker.

After completing his studies and returning home to California, Tilker's newly acquired passion for fragrance, as well as his background in natural healing, encouraged him to create and develop a line of soaps. Today, Mistral offers thirty soap fragrances, and numerous scented personal care products that blend the best of modern science with the age-old wisdom and traditions of the past.
