Whenever I go to the store and try to find a sponge like this one, NO ONE KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT --- why? It's a shame Max Factor's marketing department is so inept, because their products themselves create a massive loyalty among those who have tried them. The cheap, rubbery synthetic sponges you buy in the drugstore creep me out: so slimy and unpleasant. This sponge, on the other hand, works great for the water-based pancake makeup I've always used it with (product sounds horrid but is MAGNIFICENT - try it! you'll be hooked!), as well as for more standard liquid makeups. It glides smoothly, covers easily, and can be easily cleaned for long-term use. Form the habit of rinsing it with a little soap and water after every use, then drying it or letting it air dry, and it will last for months with great results.
