Product reviews of Nizoral AntiDandruff Shampoo 7 fl oz (200 ml) Review: A Godsend! Beauty product: 5 Stars
I've suffered from dandruff since I was a kid (I can remember scratching my head in discomfort in Grade 5, and having one kid ask "What's that white stuff on your shirt?" in Grade 6), only I didn't realize it was dandruff. I just had an itchy scalp and some flakes. I just put up with it. It wasn't horrible, exactly; I could get through the day well enough, but it usually seemed to be at it's worst at night. Right before bed, my scalp would start itching, and if I was unlucky enough, I'd toss and turn while scratching at my scalp. If I was REALLY unlucky, I'd wake up in the middle of the night because of the itching. Oy vey. A couple of years ago, I got fed up enough and decided this wasn't normal, so I started trying different things. I thought that maybe my scalp was just sensitive, so I tried a low PH shampoo. It seemed to help the itching (not the flaking) so I kept using it, especially since it made my hair look so shiny and healthy after a few weeks (I was using Earthbath, a dog shampoo. Don't laugh!). But my scalp would still itch every few days, and while it would go away as soon as I washed my hair, I didn't want to have to wash my hair every few days. It's a waste of shampoo. So I kept looking around at other types of shampoos, such as ones that don't contain SLS. Finally, someone suggested to me that what I had was dandruff, but I just scoffed. Isn't dandruff just flakes? I had SEVERE ITCHING, with flakes, and anyways, I'd definitely used Head & Shoulders several times in my life and I certainly didn't notice a difference with that (H&S is a scam, fyi). But I looked up "Dandruff" on the internet and the descriptions and symptoms definitely made some sense, so I figured I might as well try that route. The first product I tried was Nizoral, since I felt better putting that in my hair than something based on an ingredient called "Tar" (at least for the initial experiement, lol)
But oh my God. After that first washing, I felt a difference. Well, okay, not really, since any time I'd use any shampoo, the itching would abate for a couple of days. But a few days went by and my scalp didn't itch. And the flaking started to go away. I will tell you that after nearly 10 years of constantly scratching at ones head, it's hard to stop. When I used to scratch at my scalp, the skin would get irritated (or bloody) and a buildup of skin crusts (whatever you like to call it) would be scattered here and there, and I liked to pick at them and pull them off my scalp and out of my hair. That left nice showers of snow on my shoulders. After I started using Nizoral, the habit of going through my hair looking for the crusty pieces was hard to quit. Still, when I'd give up and take my hand away, I'd automatically look at my shoulders (another hard-to-break habit) and was always surprised to see them as black and clean as ever. I think it took a couple of months before I was able to NOT look at my shoulders after just running my hands through my hair (just touching my hair used to bring sprinkles of flakes). Sometimes I'd look anyway, just to be amazed.
I used Nizoral for a while (I think it was a year) and then switched to another product (tar-based) just to be sure my scalp didn't build up a resistance (for what it's worth, the stuff worked the same as Nizoral). After another while, I lost my job and eventually couldn't afford to continue with my "special shampoo" so I figured, "how bad can it be?" So I stopped buying Nizoral and just used the regular shampoo that litters our bathroom. And OH MY GOD. After a month or so, the itching and flaking was back and OH MY GOD. I cannot figure how I made it through life with the PAIN and FRUSTRATION! It was horrible! I tried to make it through with just washing my hair anytime the itching drove me insane, but after a while I'd had enough. If I needed to mug someone in a dark alley to get the money to buy my precious special shampoo, I'd do it. As long as this agony goes away! I didn't need to mug anybody, but I made sure I had my Nizoral in it's place in the bathroom. That first time I used it again, I breathed such a sigh of relief. It's not a shampoo, it's a magic potion. It's my baby.
I just wish it wasn't so expensive for such a little bottle. I have THICK long hair, and if I wasn't so conscious of how small the bottle was, I'd use half the bottle just for one washing. As it is, I try to use as small an amount as I possibly can. That little puddle alone is probably $2. But whatever, it lets me actually concentrate on my day instead of forcing my hands to randomly flap spastically towards my head. Sometimes I wanted to just sit down and cry, I was so frustrated (and itchy). The price is definitely worth it.
