The other reviewer must have done something different, I just can't agree with her. I have always had great results, but I do wash my lashes with a residue-removing shampoo very thoroughly first, on the theory that the cleaner your lashes, the better grip the solutions will have. Having worked as a professional photographer for many years with a background heavy in b/w printing, I can say that the other reviewer is absolutely correct about how the product works. I also know that if you put a greasy fingerprint (for instance) on undevelopd photo paper before developing it, you'll see the finger mark on the finished print.
I love this product. My only caveat is that you need to treat any drips or runs on your face IMMEDIATELY- otherwise you could end up looking like Alice Cooper for a few days.
