Based on the recommendation of a friend who has used sk II products for years and who have tried all top brands, like La Mer, La Pairie, shiseido, etc. I decided to give SK II a try. I've used most of the major brands myself. Didn't like La Mer (too rich, and need to warm up the cream in hand, no visible improvements to skin). I got the Essence, SK II cellumination cream and Signs Eye cream to start with, and did a comparison between these and Shiseido products that I was using daily.
My procedure:
During the 1st wk.
1. wash w/ Shiseido Benefiance cleansing foam (I like this one, it is not overly creamy that you don't feel it is cleaning, and it is nicely foamy w/o being dry)
2. apply Benefiance Balancing Softener (I like this toner)
3. on my left face and forehead, apply SKII Essence and Cellumination, and Signs Eye Cream around my eye
5. on my right face, apply Shiseido Bioperformance Advanced Super Revitalizer and Shisedio Benefiance Concentrated Anti-wrinkle eye cream around my right eye
Observation:
- Essence did make my skin touch softer, look smoother. Fine lines became less visible upon very close examination;
- Both Cellumination (looks like semi boiled egg white, feels like between gel and cream) and signs eye cream are lighter in texture and more easily absorbed than Shiseido's (I found Shiseido Bioperformance face cream to be the lightest among shiseido line)
- After one wk, the skin color/tone of my left face looked visibly better/even/fair comparing to the right face. Cellumination did seem to lighten the dark spots
- Signs eye cream seemed to reduce the puffiness under my eye comparing to Shiseido's
- overall, the side w/ SK II after immediate creaming also looked less shinny, touched less oily
2nd wk, I kept everything the same, except using SK II on my right face and Shiseido on my left face. Same observation. The dark spots on my right face were also lightened to the level of my left face.
In evaluating the effects, I tried to eliminate placebo bias (but not sure I was able to be 100% neutral due to my human flaws). The immediate effectiveness of SK II seemed to be there, though I am not sure about the long term. And whether its marginal effects worth the $150/bottle is hard to answer. But it is also unrealistic to expect the cream act like a surgeon's knife or botox. For now, I am happy w/ it and will continue to use it.
Another info: I bought mine at a department store. Con's: price is higher at department store even after promotion (they normally give you a full size Signs eye cream if you spend more than $350); pro's: authenticity, service, a cool machine to test your skin condition that you can go back, retest and compare results.
